Adopting a Facial Serum into your Skin Care routine can seem intimidating at first.
We all know of the skincare benefits, from clearing blemishes to smoothing wrinkles, and feel compelled to give it a try so what should we consider before we do?
Facial Serums are simply an added step for those that have the right skin type and are looking to go the extra mile in their daily routines. Serums help give your skin a fresher, younger and healthier appearance.
They are lightweight moisturisers that penetrate deeper to deliver active ingredients into your skin. Using a serum regularly can give your skin a firmer, smoother texture, make pores appear smaller and increase moisture levels.
By leaving out many of the heavier ingredients that are found in traditional moisturisers, face serums contain a much higher proportional concentration of active ingredients.
But it’s worth noting that serums will only moisturise to a minimal extent. Therefore, we recommend using them in conjunction with heavier moisturisers or layering if your skin is particularly dry.
The most expensive serums aren't always the best, but they do tend to contain higher quality, more concentrated ingredients.
You have to look at the ingredients to make sure that not only do they address your specific skin concerns, but also that they are the best for promoting healthy skin.
When looking for a new Skincare product you want to make sure you’re buying the correct one for your skin needs. So the 3 main questions to ask yourself are:
The right time to use a serum depends on the formula and your skincare routine.
A serum can be applied in the morning, at night, or both. For those with drier skin, serums can be layered under the morning and/or night moisturiser. If you have a chronic skin condition such as eczema or rosacea, serums may cause aggravation.
The most important rule to follow when it comes to serums: do not overuse the product. A common misconception about serums is that more is better. Because serums are typically very concentrated, a little goes a long way.
Antioxidants like pomegranate extract, vitamin C and grape seed extract help protect against possible sun damage and fight the damaging free radicals responsible for much of what we perceive as skin ageing, including fine lines.
Anti-inflammatories, including zinc, arnica, aloe vera, goldenseal, Sophora Japonica Flower Extract and Chia Seed Oil neutralise redness and prevent inflammatory cell damage.
For Breakouts look for Salicylic Acid or Lactic Acid, which will deliver a clearer, more vibrant skin.
Retinol for increasing Skin Cell turnover to reduce signs of premature ageing for a fresher, younger looking skin.
For Pigmentation look for Oligopeptides, Rice-derived Phytic Acid, Red or Brown Algae to help regulate Melanin Production to treat hyperpigmentation at its source.
Hydrators such as ceramides, amino acids and essential fatty acids strengthen the skin's barrier and help build strong cell membranes. Ingredients such as Rosehip Seed and Golden Jojoba Oils protect against dryness and fine lines by replenishing naturally occurring skin lipids, improving moisture retention and protecting skin from the environment.
If using separate products, don’t apply a serum in the evening if you are already applying a retinol cream at night, as the combination of the two products may lead to irritation.
Luckily Dermalogica have just created a New Retinol Clearing Oil for clients suffering with breakouts and ageing skin. This product combines both Retinol and Salicylic Acid to clear your skin overnight.
