Thread Vein Sclerotherapy : Treatment

Micro Sclerotherapy for Thread Veins in the Legs

How does leg thread vein removal work?

Dilated blood vessels, called telangiectasia or thread veins, are red, blue or purple in colour and appear on the surface of the body, particularly the legs. These vessels can be unsightly and larger ones can produce a dull aching of the legs after prolonged standing. If left untreated, the veins become heavier and are difficult to conceal.

To improve their cosmetic appearance, they can be treated by injection of a solution that will cause them to disappear, or at least become much smaller, leaving your legs smoother and even-toned. (Before and after image courtesy of webmd.com.)

What is Micro Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for unsightly thread veins on the legs.

What does the treatment involve?

The treatment involves injecting the veins with a sclerosing solution which causes them to seize up internally.

After the treatment session the veins become red and more obvious, but over the following weeks, they are absorbed by the body and disappear or lighten in colour.

The end result will be clearer, less defined thread veins, with benefits seen after one session.

What happens after thread vein removal?

Most people will require a follow-up treatment, four to six weeks later. Advice will be given at consultation on the number of treatments required.

Cost

I offer a mandatory sclerotherapy consultation to patients which costs £40.00.

For your safety and in order to obtain the optimum results, the instructions below must be followed.

Pre-Treatment Advice

  • Avoid alcohol and smoking for 48 hours prior to treatment.
  • Bring compression stockings with you to your procedure.
  • Do not shave or use depilatories on legs on the day of the procedure.
  • No aspirin or blood thinning products (fish oil, vitamin E) for 7-9 days before the procedure.
  • Wear loose fitting clothing which will be comfortable after your treatment.

Post Treatment Aftercare

  • DO wear compression stockings until bedtime for 3 weeks. It is not necessary to wear compression stockings while sleeping.

  • DO postpone any strenuous activities or high impact workouts for one week after treatment.
  • DO NOT take any hot baths, showers, or sit in any saunas or hot tubs for one week after treatment.
  • DO walk for at least 30 minutes a day to help blood flow circulation and minimises blood clots.
  • DO take nurofen,
  • AVOID aspirin if required after treatment.
  • AVOID flying for at least one month after treatment.

Please report any problems to us immediately.

Attend your six- and twelve-week check-up appointments. If further treatment is required, this will be done at the twelve-week appointment.

Complications and Side Effects of Micro Sclerotherapy.

All treatments have possible side effects and risks.

The risks of Micro sclerotherapy include:

  • Temporary superficial blebs or wheals (similar to hives),
  • Skin pigmentation,
  • Fine red blood vessels and, very rarely, wound infection,
  • Poor healing,
  • Allergic reactions,
  • Thrombosis or scarring which may or may not prove permanent.
There is the risk that, even after a successful treatment, veins can re-appear and require further treatment.
